I told myself this same lie for years — subscribing to #girlboss and hustle culture while ignoring all of the signals my body was sending me. And like 76% of American adults, I ended up with a chronic condition. For me — chronic pain/fibromyalgia.

In this episode, we trace the line between the emotions you learned to swallow and the symptoms you can’t explain — the tight chest, the exhaustion you can’t quite explain, and the diagnosis that follows you… and how we should all be angry that this information continues to evade the mainstream AND the information we receive from our healthcare professionals.

We cover the actual stress mechanism: what happens in the body when the nervous system stays stuck in activation, and why cortisol and adrenaline were never meant to be a permanent state. From there, we get into the research — chronic illness, autoimmune conditions, heart disease, fibromyalgia, and some genuinely unsettling findings around suppressed anger and cancer progression.

This episode isn’t meant to explain all of our health conditions as a byproduct of nervous system dysregulation and chronic stress, but it is meant to help us name something that public health has mostly ignored. Int his episode, Jess sits down with author Dusah Wiseman to talk about her book Dear Cycle Breaker and what it actually takes to step out of inherited patterns without turning healing into another performance. We start with Dusah’s publishing path, including an early rejection, intense deadlines, and what it looked like to bring this book into the world -- on a timeline she wasn’t fully expecting.

From there, we get concrete about cycle breaking, deconditioning, and why “being a cycle breaker” isn’t a label you cling to. It’s the natural result of choosing differently: learning rest when you were raised on burnout, processing emotions when you were taught to suppress them, and letting your body become an authority that tells the truth before your mind catches up. We also talk about purpose as remembrance, the power of stillness and “emptying” the noise, and how guidance should bring you back to yourself instead of making you dependent.

The conversation goes wider too, touching victim mentality with real nuance: you are not at fault for what happened to you, and you still have agency in how you respond now. We connect personal empowerment to collective change, systems crumbling, divine feminine rage, toxic masculinity, and what balance can look like when you stop tolerating what harms you. Dusah closes with practical ways to find your own clues using astrology, human design, Gene Keys, Chiron, the nodes, Saturn, and daily rituals.

If this resonates, subscribe, share it with a friend who’s ready to start, and leave a review so more cycle breakers can find the show.

If this episode spoke to you, it would mean the world if you took a moment to leave a review or share it with a friend who needs it. Her story is honest about the scary moments, including a difficult start with hormone replacement therapy (HRT), and it’s also hopeful about what becomes possible when we stop ignoring the messages our bodies are sending.

We get specific about symptoms many people don’t connect to perimenopause and menopause: crushing fatigue, anxiety, sleep disruption, and the brain fog that can make simple tasks feel impossible. Caroline explains why “menopause is one day” (after 12 consecutive months without a period), how perimenopause can begin years earlier, and why so many women get dismissed as “too young” or steered toward fixes that don’t address hormones. We explore intuition as a lived, embodied experience, how trauma and patriarchal conditioning pull us out of our bodies, and why reclaiming embodiment is both personal healing and collective resistance.

We talk about how systems like capitalism and patriarchy thrive on disconnection— especially disconnection from intuition — and why so many people (particularly women) feel burned out, numb, or “off” without being able to name why. The algorithms demand that we pick sides, thriving off of the polarization we’re living within. The stakes feel high, the path forward unclear. To look for the right script, the quick fix, the end goal. But it isn’t about following a script or waiting for change to happen. As Mars frames it, it begins on an individual level, and building the awareness around how deeply our thoughts, fears, goals, and definitions of success have been shaped for us – often without our consent.

Decolonizing the mind, as Mars articulated so clearly, isn’t a trend or a talking point. It turned into something much bigger.

I’ve always known emotional disconnection would be central to my work. I’ve felt for years that so much of what’s plaguing Western culture – especially here in the U.S. – traces back to our inability to feel. But I couldn’t quite articulate how the pieces fit together.

Subscribe now

And then it clicked. There’s this growing narrative right now that empathy is danger, irrational, manipulative, and weak. A quick book search will show you that top results for “empathy” often frame it as the problem. A widely debated Charlie Kirk quote on empathy versus sympathy underscores the war on empathy perfectly.

But what if the real threat isn’t empathy – but instead, emotional numbness?

We are living in a chronically dysregulated culture. When nervous systems stay activated long enough, capacity shrinks. Empathy dulls. Complexity becomes intolerable. Division feels safer than understanding.

And systems built on dominance, productivity, and hierarchy thrive in this disconnection.

Empathy slows dehumanization. It disrupts exploitation, and it makes looking away harder.

In this episode of Conditioning to Consciousness, I unpack the cultural “war on empathy,” how emotional suppression starts early, and why rebuilding emotional capacity might be one of the most radical acts available to us right now.

Because if empathy is being framed as a threat, we should probably ask: a threat to what?

Listen to the full episode: The War on Empathy: When Feeling Becomes a Threat.

Subscribe now

Return to Nature, Return to Self: Reclaiming Intuition in a Conditioned World with Dr. Elizabeth Philipose

The Conditioning to Consciousness Podcast

Jess Callahan

Lately it feels like the world is splitting at the seams. The conditioning starts early, and the more we conform to the systems, the more they become part of us – even perpetuated by us.

Kids learn authority and compliance before they learn discernment.

They learn to work for external rewards before they learn to trust internal knowing.

They learn what feelings are “acceptable” before they learn how to process feelings at all.

The way we’re taught to understand life in the West is shaped by a few core myths:

Scarcity: that there’s not enough (money, love, safety, opportunity), so we need to compete

Obedience as Goodness: the “right” people follow the rules, keep the peace, and don’t make anyone uncomfortable.

Control: your body, your emotions, your instincts, and your truth are “too much” and need to be managed.

When you zoom out, you can see how these myths hold up the big systems we talk about all the time – patriarchy, capitalism, racial hierarchy, colonial power.

But more than anything, I love the peacefulness and hope that Elizabeth brings to this conversation. She frames nature as the antidote to scarcity. Nature doesn’t stop creating. It doesn’t hoard or optimize. And many of the things we’ve been taught to disconnect from as part of this conditioning are contrary to our nature. To reconnect, we just need to tune into and remember what feels natural.

We are watching a system built on disconnection try to maintain itself in a world that’s waking up to interconnection.

Join me in my conversation with Elizabeth where she breaks down how the systems live within us, the paradigm shift that we’re living within (and probably feeling big time right now), and how to begin the process of reconnecting.

Elizabeth Philipose, Ph.D., has been an educator in universities in two countries for over twenty years. She teaches courses about globalization, coloniality, social justice, ecological consciousness, and decolonial feminism. She has published articles on international human rights, the laws of war, the politics of pain, transnational friendships, and sacred pedagogies. She is trained as a spiritual therapist, coach, and movement chaplain, and works with people to support their social justice advocacy. It’s not just about extremists or headlines. White supremacy is a system that shaped this country — its policies, its institutions, and its understanding of identity and belonging.

Subscribe now

And more of us need to be willing to talk about it.

Not to argue. Not to shame. Not to point fingers. But to understand what we were taught, what we weren’t taught, and how it continues to shape us.

I’ve been following Amy McDonald’s work for a while. She approaches this topic with depth and research. She names things clearly — including the way white supremacy shaped the concept of “whiteness” itself. Many European immigrants who came to America didn’t originally identify as “white” in the way we think of it now. Over time, languages, traditions, and distinct ethnic identities were flattened into a single racial category. That shift came with social benefits — and real losses.

The history we were never taught really matters.

When I invited Amy onto the podcast, I noticed tension in my body. Maybe because her courage in talking about this intimidates me a little bit. Maybe because she has a large and growing platform. Or maybe it was committing to talk about the issue itself – white supremacy – and my own fear around getting it wrong.

But staying inside my own comfort zone doesn’t move anything forward. Silence doesn’t help me grow. It doesn’t help my children grow. And it doesn’t help us understand the systems we’re living inside of.

I was grateful for the chance to learn from Amy directly. To hear about the years of research she’s done. To receive her recommendations on voices to follow – the women and thinkers and people whose experiences haven’t mirrored my own – who have influenced her work.

Conversations like this can feel uncomfortable. That doesn’t automatically mean they’re wrong. It’s the kind of astrology that doesn’t just show up in charts — it shows up in bodies, relationships, nervous systems, and the collective psyche. Even people who don’t follow astrology closely are feeling it: the destruction of one thing in order to create something new.

What I love so much about this conversation with astrologer Danielle Polgar is not just the insightful overview of key transits and the archetypal energy behind them — but her deeply grounding approach. When I first started studying systems of oppression, one of the most important things I learned is that they live inside us, too.

Subscribe now

In my conversation with Dr. Anne Whitehouse, and in her writing right here on Substack, she describes patriarchy as an operating system we’re all running on — or like a video game we’re all playing within. And slowly, we’re all starting to wake up and said I hate this game.

One thing Anne stresses often is how quietly the script runs. Patriarchy isn’t just about dominance or hierarchy — it’s about disconnection. Disconnection from intuition and feeling and processing emotions. Disconnection from cycles, rest, and community. From the body as a source of wisdom rather than a problem to manage or override.

Many of us have been taught that worth is earned through productivity, that emotions are inconvenient, and that slowing down is a failure. Over time, this conditioning doesn’t just shape our workplaces, governments, or homes — It shapes our own nervous systems, too. The subconscious is constantly receiving cues that we’re not safe, leading to exhaustion, burnout, or worse.

Dismantling patriarchy isn’t about women vs. men or tearing down institutions (although — more thoughts on that another day). It begins with awareness. It begins with noticing where we conform to gender roles in our own lives, where they show up at work and at home, and where we override our bodies in favor of approval.

Unlearning patriarchy is not about rejecting anyone or anything — it’s about restoring balance. Reclaiming emotion as intelligence. Changing our relationship with the idea of rest, and viewing the body as a guide. When we begin to question the hidden scripts running our lives, we create space for a different way of being — one rooted in connection rather than control.

And when enough of us step out of these inherited patterns, the system itself begins to loosen its grip.

Dr. Anne Whitehouse is a brilliant soul who has made it her life’s work to help people become uncaged by systems like patriarchy. In this conversation, we talk about:

The subconscious scripts that run in the back of our minds, perpetuating the system

How burnout, chronic illness, and over-functioning are often symptoms of inherited power dynamics

Fear of visibility, speaking up, and success — and where those fears originate

The witch wound and how historical persecution still shapes modern self-censorship and self-doubt

Why intuition and embodiment were suppressed — and why reclaiming them matters now

Author and former Cambridge scientist, Anne can be found on Substack at UnCaged or visit her website here.

Which part of this conversation resonates most for you? Otherwise it’s seen as indulgent, frivolous, even wasted time. In this episode, we gently dismantle that myth.

I’m joined by writer and creative guide Allegra Chapman for a rich, grounding conversation about creativity as a nervous-system practice, a form of self-care, and a path back to self-connection. We explore why so many people believe they’re “not creative,” how early experiences — especially in the early school years — can create lasting creativity wounds, and why our culture actively discourages imagination, play, and rest.

Subscribe now

Together, we talk about creativity as embodiment: using the hands, the senses, and the body to regulate the nervous system, quiet mental noise, and access intuition. We discuss creative practices as a kind of moving meditation — especially for neurodivergent minds — and why making something doesn’t need to result in a masterpiece to be meaningful. The process itself is where healing, insight, and clarity live.

This episode also touches on the deeper layers of creativity: how productivity culture, burnout, and constant output disconnect us from our inner worlds; how creative expression can restore a sense of agency and purpose; and why reclaiming imagination is quietly radical in a system that benefits from exhaustion and compliance.

If you’ve ever felt disconnected from your creativity, stuck in freeze, overwhelmed by productivity pressure, or unsure how to rest without guilt, this conversation offers a softer way back. Creativity here isn’t about talent or outcome — it’s about permission, presence, and remembering that expression is part of being human.

Topics we explore include:
creative self-care, nervous system regulation, embodiment, creativity wounds, neurodivergence and creativity, creative meditation, burnout recovery, intuition, and reclaiming imagination as a form of healing and resistance.

This episode is an invitation to play, to listen inward, and to reconnect with yourself — one small creative act at a time.

About Allegra

Allegra Chapman is an author, columnist and creative therapy practitioner. And unstable. Chaotic. Overwhelming.

It’s hard to keep up with everything that’s happening. For a lot of people, the easiest response is to shut down -- not because we don’t care, but because caring feels like too much.

But that’s the point -- the shut down, the apathy. When we check out, harmful systems advance.

This episode takes a grounded approach to the hidden cost of not speaking up -- what it does to the body and nervous system when we repeatedly override our truth, suppress our voice, or disconnect from what we know deep down is not okay. We’ll also cover how to break the cycle and start (or continue) speaking up. If you’ve felt overwhelmed, confused, numb, angry, or frozen - these are normal responses to prolonged uncertainty and collective stress.

But the way through this is by going through it. Not around it.

This isn’t a call to panic or perform. It’s an invitation to slow down, get regulated, and reconnect with what you stand for. To remember that using your voice doesn’t have to look loud or confrontational -- it can look grounded, intentional, and rooted in love. We talk about practical, sustainable ways to engage: speaking up in small moments, modeling values for our kids, building community, and choosing participation over apathy.

Most of all, this episode is a reminder that you are not weak for feeling this. You are not broken for needing rest. And you are not alone in the tension between wanting to stay safe and wanting to stay true. When we tend to our nervous systems and align with our values, using our voice becomes less about fear -- and more about integrity, care, and connection.

If you’ve been feeling the weight of the world and wondering what to do with it, this conversation is for you.

If this episode spoke to you, it would mean the world if you took a moment to leave a review or share it with a friend who needs it. Kelly’s approach to witchcraft is one of the most grounded, accessible, and empowering perspectives I’ve heard in a long time. Here she reminds us of something we’ve been conditioned to forget: You already have what you need.

Witchcraft, in Kelly’s world, isn’t reserved for the “gifted,” the initiated, or the people with a perfectly curated altar. It’s intention. It’s sovereignty. It’s the quiet power of choosing what you believe, what you’ll protect, what you’ll build — and then taking steps that move the needle.

Sometimes it looks like lighting a candle or setting a simple intention. Sometimes it looks like putting that intention behind a donation, a conversation, a boundary, or a decision. Sometimes it looks like saying: I refuse to stay numb.

Through this conversation, we explore ideas like:

If we can manifest safety, love, and expansion for ourselves… why wouldn’t we include our neighbors?
If we’re brave enough to ask the universe for guidance… why wouldn’t we also ask for justice, truth, and protection — collectively?

This is where Kelly’s work becomes powerful in a way that feels radically human: she’s building community-based spirituality through monthly community circles (free to attend) and her Patreon — spaces where people gather to set shared intentions, co-create energetic momentum, and then pair it with real-world action.

Because intention without action can become performance. And action without intention can become burnout. The medicine is in holding both.

In this episode, we talk about:

Signs and intuition (and why specificity matters when you’re asking for guidance)

How to tell the difference between intuition and fear in the body

Why “spirituality” that ignores reality isn’t spirituality — it’s avoidance

How community circles work, and why shared intention is a form of collective power

The simplest way to start practicing: intention as everyday magic

Why witchcraft is, at its core, about self-empowerment + sovereignty

And why every person has gifts — we’ve just been trained to doubt them

More than anything, Kelly offers this reminder -

The first step to getting started happens exactly where you are — with what you have — when you choose connection over collapse.

Because the truth is: we shift the world the same way we shift anything — one coherent choice at a time.

Connect with Kelly

https://www.threads.com/@thebohowitchery

https://www.instagram.com/thebohowitchery

Patreon is Witchery13

If this episode spoke to you, it would mean the world if you took a moment to leave a review or share it with a friend who needs it. It’s rage as information. Rage as truth. Rage as a signal that something in us has been overridden for too long.

Simone shares the story behind Rage Pages—a simple, powerful practice for releasing anger safely through writing (and then letting it go—rip it up, burn it, throw it away). We also talk about why so many spiritual spaces can feel bypassy, why “good vibes only” can become its own kind of cage, and how movement, ritual, nervous system awareness, and honest self-expression can help us process what we’ve been carrying—without turning it inward and letting it become anxiety, burnout, or dis-ease in the body.

If you’ve ever thought, “I’m not an angry person,” or “Rage isn’t really me,” this episode is a gentle invitation to look again. Because for so many women, rage isn’t the problem—it’s the accumulation. And when it finally rises, it’s often because something deeper is ready to be reclaimed.

In this episode, we explore:
• What “the dark feminine” really means (and what it doesn’t)
• Why feminine rage is often delayed self-respect
• How suppression shows up in the body over time
• The practice of Rage Pages (and how to use it safely)
• Why movement, dancing, and even screaming can be medicine
• How to deprogram “good girl” conditioning and return to truth

If this conversation resonates, share it with a friend who’s been holding it together for too long—and if you’re ready to experiment, try Rage Pages this week and notice what shifts.

Visit Simone on Substack.

If this episode spoke to you, it would mean the world if you took a moment to leave a review or share it with a friend who needs it. A quiet pressure to reinvent ourselves on cue — as if the simple turn of a calendar page should magically deliver clarity, motivation, and momentum.

But the body doesn’t move on command. There are biological and emotional energies of each season that support various periods of momentum and renewal. The light is soft. The nervous system is recalibrating after a season of excess, stimulation, and expectation. And yet, we’re told to override all of that and perform.

This is where so much unnecessary burnout begins.

Winter is not a void. It’s not laziness. It’s not stagnation. It’s a season of integration — when what we’ve lived, felt, and survived settles into the body. When clarity is formed quietly, beneath the surface. Seeds don’t grow in frozen ground, and neither do we.

January isn’t asking for discipline. It’s asking for listening.

Listening to what’s tired.
Listening to what no longer fits.
Listening to what’s trying to emerge without being rushed.

When we ignore winter, we lose our relationship with rhythm. We confuse rest for failure. We mistake preparation for procrastination.
